Project Background Details

The Instituto Nacional de Cancerología (INC) is a public health institution in Colombia dedicated to cancer research, prevention, and treatment. Before initiating this project, the INC faced several operational and accessibility challenges related to its large collection of scientific and institutional documents:

  • 📄 Scattered Document Storage: The Institute’s extensive library of research papers, clinical guidelines, and educational materials was fragmented across multiple platforms and formats, making access time-consuming and inefficient for both staff and external users.
  • 🔍 Limited Accessibility: There was no centralized digital platform for the public or professionals to easily consult documents, limiting the reach of their scientific contributions and institutional knowledge.
  • 💻 Manual Administrative Processes: Document management processes, including uploading, categorization, and access control, were handled manually, increasing the risk of errors and delays.
  • 📱 Need for Mobile Access: With more users depending on mobile devices, the INC lacked a digital solution that allowed users to easily consult and download documents from anywhere.

These challenges led the INC to collaborate with Kinto to develop a comprehensive digital library solution — one that would digitize their documentation processes, streamline access, and improve knowledge dissemination through mobile and web platforms.

Functional Requirements

  1. UX/UI Design
    • Creation of an intuitive and accessible interface to facilitate document navigation and search.
    • Responsive design adapted for mobile phones and tablets, ensuring a consistent experience across platforms.
  2. Mobile and Web App Development
    • Development of native applications for Android and iOS to access the digital library.
    • Creation of a web app and an admin panel for managing content and users.
  3. Document Management
    • Integration of a system to upload, categorize, and update documents in various formats.
    • Implementation of search and filtering functionalities to streamline document access.
  4. Content Access and Download
    • Enabling document viewing and downloading for offline access.
    • Optimization of loading and download speeds to enhance the user experience.
  5. Security and Access Control
    • Role-based access levels for different types of users to protect sensitive information.
    • Security protocols to safeguard stored data and documents.

Technical Requirements

  1. Integration with Existing Systems
    • Synchronization with the National Cancer Institute's existing technological infrastructure.
    • Compatibility with current databases and document management systems.
  2. Scalability and Maintenance
    • System architecture designed for scalability to support a growing number of users and documents.
    • Simplified maintenance and update processes to ensure continuous service availability.
  3. Regulatory Compliance
    • Compliance with Colombian data protection and digital accessibility regulations.
    • Implementation of international standards to ensure quality and system security.

Project Outcome

The implementation of the PublINC platform marked a significant improvement in how the Instituto Nacional de Cancerología manages and shares its documentation. Once all the requirements were met, the project delivered impactful results:

  • 📚 Centralized Digital Library: The Institute now has a unified digital repository where all institutional and scientific documents are easily accessible and well organized.
  • Faster and Easier Access: Users, both internal and external, can now search, view, and download documents with just a few taps, significantly improving accessibility and efficiency.
  • 📱 Cross-Platform Availability: With native apps on Android and iOS, as well as a robust web admin panel, the platform ensures seamless access regardless of the device.
  • 🔐 Secure and Controlled Environment: Advanced access controls and user roles provide a secure environment for sensitive information, while maintaining transparency and public access to general documents.
  • 🔄 Efficient Document Management: The administrative panel allows authorized staff to upload, update, and categorize documents in real time, making content management more dynamic and less prone to error.

The result is a scalable, user-friendly solution that supports the INC's mission of disseminating knowledge and promoting public health through accessible, well-managed information.
